John Heller

Since joining Chapman, Popik and White as a partner in 1995, John Heller has focused on trials and appeals of commercial disputes, professional liability, insurance, employment and civil rights. Mr. Heller is also a trained mediator, and after serving for many years as a settlement panelist for the local bar association, he is now retained by litigants to mediate all types of civil cases.

In over 15 years of practice, Mr. Heller has successfully defended businesses, employers and individuals in jury trials against claims of misrepresentation, breach of contract, bad faith and unfair competition. He has obtained favorable judicial rulings and settlements for attorneys and other professionals sued for malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and breach of fiduciary duty. He has negotiated employment and severance packages for executives and employees, and he obtained a published Ninth Circuit ruling on behalf of an FBI agent suing for gender discrimination and harassment.

Mr. Heller has collaborated with public interest organizations on issues that include enforcement of search and seizure rights under the Fourth Amendment, enforcement of state environmental statutes, and representation of political refugees in immigration court. He has lectured to attorneys and trade organizations on developments in civil procedure, insurance coverage, and application of employment laws in the high technology industry. He is a member of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society, and has been active as a Barrister with the Edward J. McFettridge Inn of Court.

Mr. Heller graduated magna cum laude in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1982, and from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1987.
